Lip blush experience

Lip blush is slowly becoming more and more popular with many permanent makeup artists adding it to their beauty menu. I finally bit the bullet and decided to try lip blush from Glamour Brows by Ann . Her studio is located in San Bruno and she mainly does brows, but have recently added lip blush to her services.

First things first, what is lip blush?

Lip blush is a form of semi-permanent makeup. Meaning that it only lasts for a few years before it fades, depending on your skin. Lip blush is designed to enhance the natural color and shape of your lips, giving it a slight tint and impression of fuller lips. Your esthetician will use a method called pixelating, which deposits small amounts of pigment to your lips to line and shade. The after-effect? The perfect pinky natural pout!

Deciding on your lip color

Most estheticians will have a large range of pigments that you can choose from. With Ann, I told her that I wanted something that was close to my natural lip color, since I wanted lip blush to correct some discoloration on my lips. She did have a chart of the colors she had, but she ended up mixing two shades together to create the perfect shade for me. You can bring photos of lip colors that you like, but keep in mind that colors look different on everyone because of your skin tone. If you’d like, you can bring your favorite lipstick to your appointment so your esthetician can try to replicate the color. Ann mixed a few colors and placed it on my wrist so I could compare and see what I liked best.

Pain on a scale of 1-10

As I get older I find that my tolerance of pain has decreased slightly, unfortunately. Overall, I would say the pain I experienced was a 4 out of 10. Ann applied topical numbing cream before and during the process. She mentioned that the first pass will be least painful and the last pass would be the most painful because the area will be sore. The number of passes is determined by how well your skin takes the pigment. My lips required 5 passes on the top lip and 4 on the bottom. The numbing does help but there were some areas that were more uncomfortable than others, but overall bearable.

Healing process

Lip blush is similar to ombre powder/microblading brows in terms of the healing process, but your lips heal much faster than your brows so unlike brows that take anywhere from 1-2 weeks to heal, lip blushing only takes 4-5 days. Just like brows, the color was very dramatic and dark post-treatment and during the following day. I’m currently on day 3 of the healing process and my lips are very dry and flaky, and my lips have started scabbing. Ann gave me antibiotic cream and Aquaphor and I was instructed to use the antibiotic twice a day and constantly reapply Aquaphor to keep my lips hydrated. The color is starting to form and it’s a nice, natural pink color - very similar to my lip shade. Ann did a fantastic job with the color. The healing process is a bit annoying, but the results are worth it!

Price

Lip blush can range anywhere from $400+. Luckily, I booked Ann while she was doing a promotion so I paid around $250 for the process. Some estheticians will include a free touch up following your initial appointment. Personally, I’m pretty satisfied with the results and color payout, so I’m unsure if I will go back for a touchup.

The verdict

I can definitely see lip blush becoming more and more common in the PMU industry. It can correct discoloration and even out your lips. With injectable fillers becoming so popular, lip blushing could be a great alternative in creating the illusion of fuller lips. It’s definitely less invasive and more affordable than going back for lip fillers!
